The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said on Monday that it has awarded $6 million in grants for projects to protect or bolster the health of waterways within the state.

The funding includes a project to reestablish a western banded killifish population in Lake Ripley, which is near Madison in southern Wisconsin. The department noted that the species was last seen in the waterway more than 50 years ago.

The amounts that were awarded for each project was not immediately available.

The DNR said that it will also provide funding for eight river restoration and conservation projects, 11 lake restoration and conservation projects, and aluminum sulfate treatments to remove phosphates in two northwestern Wisconsin lakes. The grant program also will provide support for 157 organizations that are participating in the DNR’s Clean Boats, Clean Waters program for the inspection of boats and trailers to reduce the risk of spreading invasive species as well as provide support for 39 organizations in the state’s Lake Monitoring and Protection Network that works in 70 of the state’s 72 counties to prevent the spread of invasive species.
